Event Type

**Update 6/29: We are still planning to hold this event! Storytelling will likely be in the barn due to wet conditions. There is no guarantee of fireflies coming out tonight (but fingers crossed!) due to the weather.**

Come enjoy the magic of the fireflies at Sheep Hill! Join local naturalist Doug Lister for a fun filled evening of storytelling culminating in an evening walk around the meadow amongst the fireflies. Doug will share animal stories gathered during his travels through all 50 states, including tales from Alaska, the Great Basin, the Southeast, Great Plains, and our very own Northeast region. Doug has been known to add a trickster story or two to his program to make sure the audience is still paying attention. Enjoy firefly themed crafts, snacks and a campfire with s-mores to round out the evening. Bring the whole family and a neighbor or two!

No registration needed for this event. For questions, email programs@rurallands.org.

Parking at Sheep Hill: There are two small-sized crushed stone parking lots: one is at the bottom of the driveway by the road and the other is behind the farmhouse. There is one ADA-compliant parking spot just in front of the farmhouse. Overflow parking is available at the Bullock Ledge Wildlife Management Area Parking just before the Sheep Hill driveway. Please be careful walking along Rt. 2 if you park here!

Facilities at Sheep Hill: Wheelchair accessible bathrooms are available in the farmhouse, which also has heated indoor space and seating. Seating (benches, picnic tables and chairs) will be provided for storytelling.

Surfaces & Terrain: All events will take place on areas of mowed grass. There may be some wet or muddy spots along the trails. The walk will be approximately ~0.5 miles along the Meadow Walk with no more than 50 ft elevation gain.

What to bring: Please check the weather before arriving and bring appropriate clothing that will be warm. Bring a blanket to sit on and a mason jar if you’d like to gently catch (and release before you leave) a firefly to inspect up close. Butterfly nets available for walk.

Cancellation: Adverse weather such extreme cold/heat or heavy rain will cancel this event. Please keep an eye on this page for updates on the program.
