How do you keep a trail in good shape? Amidst the continual growth of trees and shrubs, the increasingly torrential summer rains (and winter wind!), we’re lucky that our trails here in Williamstown stay pretty much…the same.

This is largely thanks to a reliable corps of local trail adopters and maintainers, folks who have committed to maintaining a specific trail or trails throughout the year. If you are interested in learning about trail work, come join us for a couple of hours at the WRLF Loop Trail at Berlin Mountain. We’ll provide a brief tutorial and then hit the trail as a group for some spring trail maintenance. We will be clearing waterbars and ditches (to help facilitate drainage of water off the trail), and maintaining the trail corridor (clipping branches to clear the area where hikers walk). Who knows, maybe by the end of it, you’ll want to adopt a trail yourself!

Work will involve stooping, bending, digging with hand tools and light pruning. It will also involve chatting and having a good time. We will hike 2 miles in total, on easy-to-moderate terrain.

  • All tools will be provided.
  • Wear sturdy shoes and dress for the weather.
  • Bring your own water, snack, work gloves.
  • No dogs, please.
