Spring ephemerals mark the beginning of the growing season in New England and their colors – from the purple-blues of Blue Cohosh to the deep maroon of Trilliums – are a delight after the drab colors of winter. Come enjoy a spring stroll through the northern hardwood forest at Berlin Mountain to see what spring ephemerals are out and learn about these hardy early flowers.

Suggested donation $5 – 10.

Directions: From Rt. 7, turn onto Rt. 2W by A-Frame Bakery towards Petersburg Pass. In 0.4 miles, turn left onto Torrey Woods Road, which parallels Rt. 2W. At the three-way intersection, continue straight onto Berlin Rd., a dirt road. Follow Berlin Rd. for 2 miles until it dead ends in the parking lot by the old Williams College ski trail. Be aware that Berlin Rd. may be muddy and slippery if there has been a recent rain.

Trail details: We will be walking along the WRLF Loop Trail, ~ 1 mile out and back trail. This trail goes down a slight hill from the parking lot and then continues on relatively level ground parallel to Haley Brook. We will not be crossing the brook.  Some stretches of trail near the parking lot may be wet.

Parking: There is a medium-sized dirt parking lot at the Mt. Berlin Trailhead (end of Berlin Rd., Williamstown).

Facilities: There are no bathrooms or indoor spaces at this site.

What to bring: Please check the weather before arriving and bring appropriate clothing (warm, non-cotton layers, weather proof light jacket, waterproof boots).
