Join our monthly zoom lecture series, Talks on the Hill, as presenter Tom Johnson discusses forecasting climate change by looking back at climate history. What can be learned by ‘hindcasting’, when scientists compare analysis of tree rings, sediment cores from lakes and oceans, ice cores, and cave deposits? Tom will review key results from studies, and reflect on the ‘paleoclimatology” of New England.

Tom Johnson was trained as a geological oceanographer, and after numerous ocean expeditions, turned his attention to the Great Lakes of the world. He was the founding Director of the Large Lakes Observatory at the University of Minnesota Duluth, and led numerous expeditions to Great Lakes in the Americas, Africa, and Central Asia.  He retired to Shelburne Falls where he continues to conduct research with colleagues at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
